Full-Time Director of Development

CultureMap is the largest digital lifestyle brand in Texas and an essential media resource in Houston, Austin and Dallas. Our network of local websites, newsletters and mobile offerings help people discover and explore their city. We publish up the minute news on dining, shopping, arts and entertainment, real estate, and society, and serve nearly 1 million unique users a month… and we’re growing fast. With the completion of our current round of financing, we will be launching in 5 additional markets across the country over the next two years.
With plans for expansion on the immediate horizon, there has never been a more exciting time to join CultureMap. We are looking for an experienced Python / Django developer to take the helm as Director of Development and help drive company growth and evolution.
Responsibilities include leading a small team of developers in the scaling, development, and maintenance of the website and its subsystems. This role interacts with editorial, marketing, sales, and the executive team to define and execute future development initiatives and collaborates closely with a UI/UX designer and art director on implementation.
CultureMap.com is written in Python / Django and utilizes several third party services like Amazon S3, Amazon SES, Google App Engine, etc.
•Google App Engine
•Ubuntu Linux Administration
•Google Enterprise Ad Serving
•BA/BS degree or relevant experience
•7+ years of web development, social, and ecommerce experience
•Experience managing a lean development team with tight schedules
•Expertise creating highly-scalable web applications, ideally with Python / Django
•Knowledge of recommendation engines and algorithms
•Experience with social APIs (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest)
•Familiarity with Responsive Design
•Code and Maintain CultureMap.com and subsystems
•Lead and manage the development team
•Interact with other teams to identify bugs and new features
•Plan development and deployment efforts; rollout system changes and upgrades that meet requirements for functionality, performance, scalability, and reliability
•Quality assurance, bug tracking and fixes
•Email list management and support
•Implement responsive design
•Work with Director of SEO and editorial team to optimize the site for search engines
•Build applications for ecommerce
•Assess and mitigate risks; provide escalation management
•Keep abreast of new technology and make recommendations for the company
•Help create an environment that enables innovation, success and fun
•Full-time position reports to Chief Digital Officer
