Shoes of Prey is creating software to revolutionize the way affordable luxury products are purchased and manufactured. Founded by two ex-Googlers and an advertising exec in 2009, the company has experienced very strong growth each year. We’ve been backed by a number of influential silicon-valley investors, raising over $10m to date. It’s our view that mass customization, coupled with on-demand production, is the future of retail. With 5 years of success behind us, we’re in the box seat to make this happen and build a billion dollar company. We’d love for you to come and join us!

We are literally inventing a new way to purchase and manufacture goods. Our work is cutting-edge, fast-paced and extremely exciting. To achieve our goals we have some interesting, mind-bending software engineering problems we need to solve with the data we generate. A crucial example: How do we harness the data we have to help customers design a shoe they will love.

We also have a treasure trove of unique data outlining the types of shoes our customers are designing from all over the world. We’ve used this data in PR activities, but how else can we leverage this with retailers and other shoe companies? We’d love your help working this out!

As a data systems engineer, you will own the systems involved in ensuring that our website data is readily available and easy to manipulate for analysing and making decisions throughout our business. After hitting that goal – there’s a lot of room to expand into using that data for machine learning and recommendation systems.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be smashing the following out of the park:

  1. Setting up a mostly self maintaining data pipeline using the best automation tools you can find. Your system detects and resolves faults without intervention most of the time and the teams depending on it never notice issues.

  2. Automating dashboarding and reporting for many people and teams in the business to free up more of their time.

  3. Helping grow a data-driven culture in the company by providing easy access to the right data at the right time

Your work experience should clearly identify that you have the following traits:

  • Strong programming skills, and good software engineering sense

  • A keen analytical sense and an aptitude for statistics

  • Good debugging ability

  • Ability to build systems from the ground up on your own

  • Experience with complex data pipelines (including processing phases that clean the data)

  • Good architecture sense for building reliable, fault tolerant systems spanning multiple machines / services.

  • Ability to choose the right data structures to make pipelines simpler.

  • A passion for learning and expanding your skillset

  • The ability to think strategically about problems, with a clear focus on ensuring the company’s commercial objectives are met.

  • At least 2-3 years in working with data pipelines

  • Work well as a developer in a team – produce high quality code that’s easy for others to read, write good tests, etc. Feel free to include samples of your work on github, bitbucket, etc.

You should have significant experience with the following technologies, or their equivalents:

  • Python

  • ETL processes for moving data from OLTP to OLAP stores

  • Both SQL / NoSQL databases

  • Data warehouse systems (Bigquery / Redshift)

  • Data processing systems (e.g Hadoop / MapReduce)

  • Analytics / BI tools (e.g Looker, Chartio, Tableau)

  • Data processing in python (e.g pandas)

Our team works 2 blocks from the beach in a great office space in Santa Monica, California.
